Overview

In the Pacific there is an island that looks like a big fish sunning itself in the sea. Around it, blue dolphins swim, otters play, and sea elephants and sea birds abound. Once, Indians also lived on the island. And when they left and sailed to the east, one young girl was left behind.

This is the story of Karana, the Indian girl who lived alone for years on the Island of the Blue Dolphins. Year after year, she watched one season pass into another and waited for a ship to take her away. But while she waited, she kept herself alive by building a shelter, making weapons, finding food, and fighting her enemies, the wild dogs. It is not only an unusual adventure of survival, but also a tale of natural beauty and personal discovery.

Our family really enjoyed this story. My 6-year old daughter would not let me return the cd's. The story is simple to understand and the writing allows you to vividly picture the island and its occupants. I liked how Karana constantly worked hard for her survival and showed resourcefulness and wisdom. She learned important lessons about caring for her environment and its inhabitants. She made "friends" with her enemies or at least learned to respect them. Great book for the whole family!

This book was so stupid and pointless. I don't know why I spent my time on this piece of trash. Don't bother reading this book.

Simply wonderful ... Tantoo Cardinal is PERFECT as Karana. I now understand why this book is so beloved. I wish I had read it in 1961 so that I would have had it in my heart all these years! If you have not read it, don't wait another moment.
