As another reviewer has stated, this is Apocalypse Now in space. I have not enjoyed a Star Wars novel this much since the first Tim Zahn trilogy when I was in college. Fantastic writing. This guy has written some fantastic books that hopefully will make it to audiobooks, so keep an eye out!
This isn't the typical Star Wars novel in that you have bad guys and good guys fighting. In this novel, there are at least 3 or 4 factions fighting not including civilians. This story has more in common with Heart of Darkness and the commentary of Apocalypse Now. Mace Windu is sent in the middle of a bloody civil war to find a rogue Jedi that created an army of her own. She is also, like the characters from the books, quite mad from being a first hand witness of the horrors of war. Compared to the normal clean cut Star Wars story, this is a graphic tale of war with no holds barred. I read the book and it gives you an overview, but of course the book digs deeper in the character's past.
